The Algonquin Hotel: A Century of Wit, Whiskey, and Words

How a cancelled flight became an unforgettable stay in a legendary NYC Landmark

November 2025

Sometimes travel surprises us — and not always in ways we plan.

Last weekend, a government shutdown and an air-traffic-controller shortage turned our return flight into a cancellation. Instead of frustration, we decided to turn lemons into lemonade — by checking into one of New York’s most storied addresses: The Algonquin Hotel on West 44th Street.

And what a silver lining it turned out to be.

A Hotel with a Story to Tell

Opened in 1902, the Algonquin became the unofficial home of Manhattan’s literati.  Each day at lunch, a group of wits and wordsmiths—later immortalized as The Algonquin Round Table—gathered at the same corner table. They were New York’s literary royalty: Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Alexander Woollcott, and George S. Kaufman, among others. Their quick tongues and sharper humor gave rise to magazine columns, Broadway plays, and the kind of cultural gossip that shaped the Jazz Age.

Hotel manager Frank Case, who took over in 1907, understood that what he was hosting wasn’t just lunch—it was legend. He encouraged the gatherings, often joining in, and later became a chronicler of the hotel’s most sparkling years.

Even today, the oak-paneled lobby hums with that same quiet intellect. Portraits of Parker and her peers line the walls, and the resident cat — currently Hamlet IX — patrols like a literary ghost from another era.

History Meets Happenstance

What began as a travel hiccup became a night wrapped in history: cocktails in the Blue Bar, conversations beneath antique chandeliers, and a reminder that sometimes the best travel moments are the unplanned ones.

Reflection

If these walls could talk, they’d whisper stories of writers, dreamers, and lovers who lingered long after the curtain call. They’d tell stories of playwrights scribbling dialogue on cocktail napkins, of debut authors toasting their first reviews, of Parker’s razor wit echoing through the dining room. But they’d also whisper of quiet mornings when sunlight filters through the curtained lobby, the city noise muffled outside, and history feels unexpectedly alive.  It’s proof that travel isn’t always about the destination — sometimes it’s about how gracefully you pivot when plans go sideways.

When life cancels your flight, check into a story instead.
